What is Jailbreaking?
Jailbreaking is the process by which an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch's operating system is modified allowing the user write access to the file system. Once jailbroken, users are able to download and install many applications, extensions and themes unavailable through the App Store via unofficial installers such as Cydia. A jailbroken iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch is still able to use the App Store and iTunes.

Why Jailbreak? Does the Device Become Unstable and Not Work Reliably?
Absolutely NOT! Of course, Apple will say otherwise to scare users from jailbreaking their devices. Even without jailbreaking, users already experience various issues. For example, the iPhone 4 'Antennagate' or 'Death Grip' being one of the most publicized issues.

What is SIM Unlocking?
Unlocking is the removal of SIM restrictions on the modem, allowing the use of the device on any carrier.

  3. Updating the iPhone firmware to a later version not specified above or that has not been confirmed to work will RE-LOCK your iPhone.
